Signal Boost!

I'm now the proud owner of a share of a share in Fae Hollow and Sea Fire Productions! Even with as cash strapped as we've been with the game store, I couldn't ignore the need of one of my favorite musicians. Fae Hollow is the home of Alec James Adams, and Sea Fire Productions is the recording label for Heather Alexander, Uffington Horse, and Alec James Adams. I'm hoping to scrape up the money to buy another share on Friday.

Signal Boost: Gamers Help Haiti! DriveThruRPG Offers a Mega-Bundle to Spur Donations

Gamers Help Haiti! Join together with other gamers and donate now: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product_info.php?products_id=78023

From their site:

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

DriveThruRPG announced a major incentive to the roleplaying gamer community today to incite donations to aid in rescue and recovery in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Called the "Gamers Helping Haiti Bundle," the product includes over a hundred products totaling over $1000.00 in retail value. For a simple donation of $20 - all of which goes to Doctors Without Borders to support their post-earthquake Haiti relief efforts - RPG fans can have this once-in-a-lifetime collection of gaming products.

DriveThruRPG already had opportunities to donate up and running within a day of the disaster. When publishers began asking how they could support the cause, the bundle was created to be an all-inclusive shared effort. Those who donated at the lesser levels won't be left out, however; gamers who have already donated $5 or $10 will be receiving a special coupon code that lets them pay the difference from their initial donation to get the bundle.

"We are humbled by the generosity of both our customers and our publishers," said Sean Patrick Fannon, Marketing and Communications Manager for DriveThruRPG, "all of whom have stepped up at this time of terrible tragedy to offer aid to a desperate people. We are also very proud to facilitate these collective efforts, providing the necessary tools and technology to bring it all together."

More than tools and tech, though, DriveThruRPG is really putting their money where their mouth is, so to speak. "We have always believed in the power of giving and sharing to make the world a better place," said Steve Wieck, President and co-owner of the site. "To that end, we are matching funds with everyone who's making a straight donation at the $5 and $10 level."

There is no set date for terminating the donation efforts, though the bundle will only be available until the end of January.

Anyone wishing more information about this effort, or about DriveThruRPG overall, should contact Sean Patrick Fannon at sean@onebookshelf.com.

-----------

When I donated they said they had raised almost $90,000 to help Haiti.

If you haven't already, you might want to check your latest journal entries for evidence of this exploit: http://news.livejournal.com/117957.html

My last post got hit with it (thanks [livejournal.com profile] vixyish for the heads up to go check!) even though my last post was 7 weeks ago and the last comment was 5 weeks old! Looks like the powers that be have it all shut down/up/whatever now, but you should still check your most recent post and edit it if it shows the mentioned signs of tampering, especially if you were reading LJ last night.

The Death of an Era?

I'm really torn about this one... For those that don't know there have been two “real” game stores (ie: have a open gaming area to play in the store) in Tucson for over a quarter of a century. One was Things for Thinkers, the store my husband and his brother bought when it failed five and a half years ago for the starting stock and fixtures for our store. The other was Hardcastle Games, which was sold to a new owner around the same time. Times changed, and over the next few years Hardcastle defaulted back to the original owner and underwent a name change to Nemesis Games and my husband and I bought out Dave’s brother. But with the exception of a few months almost six years ago, there have always been two game stores here.

We were told very early yesterday morning (or really late the night before, depending on point of view) that starting the 31st of July, Nemesis Games is only open Friday and Saturday from Noon until 6pm for the purpose of clearancing out the remaining stock and fixtures and that come the end of Aug, they are closing their doors forever.

I honestly don’t know what to think about their closure. It may not have been the friendliest of relationships at times (much more from the regulars on both sides than from the owners), but they were still our brother-store. If we were out of stock on something they were only a couple miles down the road, and they would return the favour. All four of the current owners of Nemesis have “real” jobs, and are not reliant on the store for their income unlike Dave and myself. I always thought that if the recession took one of the two stores out it would be ours, since we couldn’t remove the burden of our paycheque from it the way they could if they just had a bad week or two. Only from what I’ve been told, it wasn’t a bad week for them… It’s been a bad year… We’re not exactly doing great, but we’re still clinging on.

It’s a strange feeling to find that our brother won’t be there soon and we’ll be alone. I hope we’re up to the challenge

Dubhain's Journal part 1

Okay… I’ve had a couple requests from folks in the store that I type up Dubhain mac Dhara O Raghailligh giolla Romero’s adventures in journal format. I could start another journal just for that, but I’m really not doing that much with this one and there might be folks here interested in reading this as well. I will be LJ cutting the journals to keep from eating everyone’s friends pages alive.

For those who played with Lord Drachenheim, Dubhain mac Raghailligh o Dhara three years ago the back history for this character is almost the same (as I really missed playing him and reset him back to 100 points for this game), save for the fact he did not return to Inismore after the War of the Cross and get hired as Rhiannon ni Nolan’s bodyguard. Instead he hired on as a bodyguard for a Syrneth artifact hunter from Eisen named Nikolas von Insel. When Nikolas retired from active collecting in late 1667, a Vaticine priest who was also seeking Syrneth artifacts by the name of Father Romero hired Dubhain. This journal covers the adventures of Romero’s group of artifact hunters.

Memory Lane

I was searching the computer for Lord Drachenheim, Dubhain mac Dhara O Raghailligh's old background for 7th Sea and I ran across the old Khemar archives... And realized just how much I miss a good old-fashion creative writing project. I'm currently in four RPG groups- two of them 7th Sea and thus actual Role-play and not just hack-n-slash- but table-top just doesn't have the same depth as the written word. The old Khemar game had it's faults- and I was working too hard at Target to ever have possibly kept up with the posting volume of the top five posters there; but it was a great deal of fun and I would love to do something like it again (as I seriously doubt we would ever be able to start Khemar itself again).

Once again I have allowed a long time pass between posts. I do read LJ almost daily, but the 20 minutes or so I can justify most days doesn’t allow for much more than reading the 40 or so entries that have popped up in the last day. I have finished my chores early tonight, so to catch everyone up on things: Really long update about Owning a Game Store, Moving a Game Store and My Wedding cut for space. )It’s getting late and I need to get to bed. I will /try/ to update a bit more often in the next couple of months.

So much has happened in the last 7 months I'm not certain where to start... The last month and change are the clearest, and contain the biggest news, so I guess I'll start with the events of late April....

Oh, how time passes....

Some of you locally know most of this, some of you locally don't and almost all of my LD friends have not heard all this, so since I've been nudged by a couple people and have computer time at work today I’m going to try to give a highlights update since my last one almost a year ago… (I’m a bad girl, I know).

This is going to be long.... )

Micro-update and wish list

Sorry about the long stretch between updates. Yes, Target is still on crack, but I have found a loophole of sorts (though it has it's own headaches at this time of year)- I'm now the only one responsible for stocking electronics. Hopefully, after Christmas I'll have a bit more time to give a full update about the little stuff like the guy I want to date that wants to date me but we both work killer hours and similarly silly and important stuff, but I've been asked to get a wish list up for those folks that don't know what to get me.

Books:

The Empty Chair by Diane Duane (It's in the old Trek series, but I don't know the number. It's just come out last month.)

The Constant Princess - Phillipa Gregory (I probably misspelled the author's name. I've been staring at the series at work and this one looks particularly good.)

Odd Thomas - Dean Koontz

DVDs

Clerks II

Clive Barker's Haeckle's Tales

RPG's:

Forgotten Realms GM Screen

Complete Mage

Serenity: Out in the Black

Most of you already know this, but damn Target is on crack.....

I have a new idiot boss to replace the old one we finally convinced to listen to us just before he left. So we're back to doing things to stupid way. work related rant here. ) So I'm suddenly going to have time next week, though it probably won't last. I am officially shifting to 4am on the 19th, so at least I'll be able to use the time to set up my character for the Saturday game at Hat's I'm joining on the 24th when I'm free in the afternoons. 5th level Scout in the Dungeon from Hell. That, at least, is going to be fun! Work can hang.

Well, I've got an update on the whole Checkers dead battery mess. The corporation sent me a letter saying they'll cut me a check for $100 if I promise not to sue.

This one took some thought. It's not even half of what I lost, but I did get the battery out of the Van before it did any real damage to the alternator or starter. The amount they owe me isn't enough to really be worth the court costs if I wanted to fight them on it. Finally I held my nose and signed their little waver. The battery is the only part from them that /had/ been in the Van, so I at least don't have to deal with them again, thankfully; nor worry that something in the wording prevented me from getting redress on a different problem.

I'm not happy with the final solution, but at least they gave me enough to pay [livejournal.com profile] hamner to cat sit the babies come Highlands and still have some spending money.

This has /not/ been a good week so far. I needed a jump to get back to this side of town from St. Mary's hospital on Monday. Well, the battery's almost 4 years old. Out here in the land of the baking sun, that's all but ancient. It was under warranty still, so I went straight to Checkers Auto Parts where the previous owner had bought the last one at just after selling the car to me. The employee came out with their little electronic test box and said that no, the battery was fine. It's the alternator. It's overvolting. I happened to glance at the screen when she told me that. It read 14.6 volts. I know next thing to nothing about car electrical systems, so I took her at her word. I asked if the car would be okay through Friday since- those of you who are reading this would know what a large amount of gaming stuff I picked up /last/ week- I was only 3 days from payday and I didn't think the $140 I had left in the account was enough to get the alternator fixed. She assured me, yes, the battery was fine. Just get the alternator replaced soon, before the alternator fries the battery.

I got home and went to take a nap for work. A few hours later I go to try to start the car. Nada. I end up having to call out from work. There's 10 hours of pay, gone. I managed to get a hold of [livejournal.com profile] great_cthulhu and made arrangements for him to give me a jump in the morning before he went to work. Still Nada. The van didn't want to even /try/ to turn over.

After trying for 1/2 a hour I gave up and called my mechanic and got a tow..... A few hours later (he was busy) I got told:

The battery has a dead cell.

That's why it wouldn't even jump. The battery was interfering with the attempt. Not only that, but when I mentioned the alternator and the "overvolting" he said that volt reading was normal. Nothing is wrong with the alternator. Total bill: 139.56 (After he cut me a deal on the tow).

I took that battery right back to Checkers and informed the manager of what happened. After a little running around to get the paperwork proving I missed work, he's started to write up a claim for corporate to review.... It might take a bit, but hopefully I'll get my $225 I lost on this mess back (lost wages, the tow, full price on a battery that I had come to claim the warranty on the day before). Thankfully he had been there the day before and saw me, so I /didn't/ have to insist he review his tapes to prove I had been there. But still, very aggravating. Then my higher ranking boss fussed over me missing work when I came in the next night... He was getting to the point I really wanted to deck him.

I'm really getting to the point where I don't need anything else stressing me out this week. Life has just been too high strung of late.
